  3. Ball Valve

Ball valves are the most commonly used valves in the oil and gas industry. It has been designed to seal the flow, thereby ensuring maximum security and preventing leakage.

Ball valves, along with butterfly and plug valves, is a part of quarter-turn valve family. The valve gets its name from the ball that rotates to open and close the valve. Ball valves are used in situations where tight shut-off is required.

The most common ball valves are considered to be two-way, which allows flow to travel linearly from the inlet to the exit. Furthermore, the three-way and four-way ball valves allow for flow to travel in multiple directions, including 90-degree angles.

How Does A Ball Valve Work

A ball valve is a form of quarter-turn valve which uses a hollow, perforated and pivoting ball to control flow of liquid or gas through it. The turn lines the hole in the ball parallel to the flow so the media is able to pass through the valve. When the valve is closed, the ball is rotated so the hole is perpendicular to the flow, blocking the media.

They have a long life and safe to operate in tough services even in case of corrosive fluids.

The ball valve’s ease of operation, repair, and versatility lend it to extensive industrial use, supporting pressures up to 1000 bar and temperatures up to 752 °F (400 °C), depending on design and materials used. Valve bodies are made of metal, plastic, or metal with a ceramic; floating balls are often chrome plated for durability.

Applications of Ball Valves

  • As mentioned earlier, ball valves are commonly used in oil and gas plants. It is used for transportation and distribution of oil and gas.
  • Ball valves also prove to be very useful and easy to use in petrochemical industries and chemical industries for processing and storage of material.
  • Other uses include hydrogenation of coal, gasification of coal, transport of solids, construction of power plants or nuclear oil and gas and the food industry.
  • Ball valves are commonly found in flowing systems on ships, fire safe protection services and chlorine manufacturers.

Advantages Of Ball Valves

  • Double block
  • Fire safe
  • Low purchase and maintenance cost
  • Maintains high resistance
  • Quarter turn lever operation to close & to open
  • Does not require lubrication

When the handle of a ball valve is parallel to the valve or pipe, it’s open. When it’s perpendicular, it’s closed. This makes it easy know if a ball valve is open or closed, just by looking at it. The ball valve below is in the open position.

There are four general types of ball valves: full port, reduced port, v port, Cavity filler, Trunnion, Multiport A full port ball valve.
